Well, the good news is that I survived Christmas. I didn't think it was going to happen. Basically we all agreed not to talk about the accident until next Monday, which I think is smart. I found out that my car is going to take at least $10,000 to repair. Yikes, right? The insurance company may just decide to total it. That would really suck, but it's nothing I can't handle.

I got a creme brulee set for Christmas, including a really nice professional-quality torch. Fucking awesome. I guess once you hit 20 you only get one nice thing for Christmas. My brother got Beatles Rock Band and Star Trek and Up on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, since the Rock Band instruments are still on back order, my brother cannot play his awesome game. He's been playing it nonstop on our cousins' system.

We're spending New Year's in Galveston at the condo, so if anyone is going to be in the area and wants to party with me and a bunch of 80 year olds, give me a call. We can get drunk and watch depressing foreign movies, it'll be great. I might even rent Oldboy.

Anyway, that's everything that's worth telling. I feel fine. I'm in Rhode Island, it's fucking freezing, and we're going to a wine tasting later.

~Christine

So I just finished the first of my finals, in Business Statistics. It was brutal, but I'm pretty confident I got a good grade. I have a high A in the class already.

I have two more to go today, and then I'm done. I got exempt from the two I was supposed to have on Tuesday, and I asked the professor of my one on Thursday if I could take it earlier and now I'm taking it this afternoon. I have a feeling this is going to be the longest day of my life.

But after that...I will breathe an enormous sigh of relief. I can spend my Christmas break focusing on important things, like taking the GRE and applying for grad school and scholarships and grants and deciding whether I want to go to UNT or TWU, and whether I want to be in Denton or Houston (since both schools have branches in Houston that offer classes in the program I want.) It's a lot to process, but I know I can do it.

Monday we're leaving for Rhode Island, as usual. It's going to be weird not seeing my grandma as much while I'm there, since apparently she's too busy doing exciting things with her new retirement community friends to bother her family. I'm happy for her, and hopefully this means my mom and aunt won't have to drink as much this Christmas. Still, I'd rather sleep in my grandma's condo then my aunt's drafty old house with poor central heating. I'm a spoiled brat, I know.

Also, I would like to thank the person who spoiled the Dexter season finale for me, even though she knew I was not going to have a chance to watch it until tonight. You know who you are. YOU ARE A LIFE RUINER. THANKS A LOT.

Anyway, good luck to all of you on your finals, I hope you do well.

~Christine

I don't think that school libraries should have an erotica section, because that's what the Internet is for. But other than that, I don't think there's anything inappropriate for teenagers. Kids these days are so desensitized that I don't think there's anything that a normal school library would carry that could cause so much damage that it would need to be banned.

This is a sad, tragic, horrible day.

My one, my only, my Jack Skellington purse that I loved dearly and used daily for more than three good years, has fallen apart.

I bought Jack at a sidewalk handbag stand in Monterrey, Mexico, in June of 2006. It was the perfect size and shape for holding my necessities, and had a nice long strap so that I could wear it across my body, as I am inclined to do. In college Jack became the item that I was known for--he was not only a purse, but also a conversation starter. His vinyl exterior made him waterproof and therefore perfect for carrying during rainy days and visits to amusement parks.

Today, at approximately 12:15 PM, as I was walking to CVS to receive my flu shot, the straps on both sides fell apart where they were attached to the body of the bag. Not long after, the zipper fell off. I tried to replace it, but it was too late; he was already gone.

I mourn the loss of my favorite purse--he was a dear friend who gave me so much. I will never find another purse like him; he was the best $10 I ever spent. RIP.

I think the way we eat will become more efficient in the future. Most people will just eat artificially flavored nutrition bars. Real food will become a niche market, and the "slow food" movement will become even more of a fringe group.

It will be like Soylent Green, only out of desire rather than scarcity. As our world becomes more fast-paced we will become more apathetic about taste.

    <lj:music>Interpol - Slow Hands</lj:music>

At least once in every class, there is a moment when all hell breaks loose. A student, deciding he or she (usually he) doesn't want to listen to the lecture, seizes the opportunity to ask the professor a politically charged question on a subject that he knows the professor feels very strongly about. First the professor starts to rant, then some ultra-conservative Bro makes an inane and ignorant comment about terrorism, an ultra-liberal female classmate calls him a stupid redneck, and before you know it everyone is caught up in the melee, spouting off tired rhetoric spoon-fed to them by their media outlet of choice and refusing to actually have a civil debate. Eventually abortion is brought up, and by that point you know that your entire class period has been fucked.

In the meantime, the student who originally asked the question has either slipped out of the classroom or is text messaging their friends about how everyone is making a total ass of themselves and how hilarious it is.

That moment happened today in my Consumer Behavior class. No, I didn't start it; I was doodling in my notebook. You would think that professors would know by now how to recognize when they are being baited into wasting class time. If I can see it coming from a mile away, why can't they?

So, my 21st birthday is on Thursday. I have off Thursday and Friday, so here's the tentative plan:

Thursday evening, my house for drinks and hors d'oeurves. Then the designated driver (aka my mom) will take us to the mall for the midnight showing of Inglourious Basterds and take us home. You don't have to bring gifts (although they would be nice), and you'll have to buy your own movie ticket. However, there will be plenty of munchies beforehand and I will provide movie candy.

RSVP as soon as possible, and let me know what kind of candy you want. If you can't make it, let me know anyway and I'll try to get together with you before I leave on the 27th.

~Christine

    <lj:music>The Lumberjack Song</lj:music>

So this week has pretty much sucked hardcore for me. My parents left Saturday for their romantic 25th anniversary celebratory Caribbean cruise. Monday I started feeling badly. Tuesday I realized I had a bladder infection and had to go home early from work. Yesterday and today were full of burning pain, running to the bathroom every ten minutes, and everyone at work being general douchebags for no reason.

And now the air conditioning unit has busted and the entire house is as hot as an oven. I am trying to take my mind off it by knitting and watching Monty Python's Flying Circus, but I am so uncomfortable it is unreal.

Tomorrow I don't have to work, but I'm not sure what to do with myself. I wanted to do some housecleaning, but I'm not staying in a house with broken air conditioning. Tomorrow is payday, so I've got to take care of that because I'm almost totally broke. If anybody wants to do something like go see a movie, I'm up for that. I really want to see 500 Days of Summer, but the only theater in Houston showing it is River Oaks. I know it gets a wider release in September, but I can't wait for that. Whatever.

Anyway, I'm already tired and this heat is making me even sleepier. Maybe I'll go to bed early.

~Christine
